Little Broken Hearts (Deluxe Edition)

Little Broken Hearts (Deluxe Edition)

This expanded reissue of Norah Jones’ fifth Blue Note outing tacks on a live set from the 2012 Austin City Limits festival, previously unreleased. The studio bonus tracks “Killing Time”, “I Don’t Wanna Hear Another Sound” and a reworked “Out on the Road” appear here for the first time digitally, and most of the material from 2013’s Little Broken Hearts Remix – EP is thrown in for good measure. The original album was produced by Danger Mouse, a notable departure after Jones’ collaborations with Arif Mardin, Craig Street, Jacquire King and others. The aesthetic is more indie/alternative, distinct from the rootsy, piano-based pop of Jones’ earlier work. Compared to the venturesome remixes, the live tracks are more faithful to the album versions, although Jones’ voice takes on a greater immediacy without the veil of filters and effects that lent the album its air of sonic intrigue. Joined by guitarist Jason Roberts, keyboardist Pete Remm, bassist Josh Lattanzi and drummer Greg Wieczorek, Jones blurs boundaries of style, making clear that Little Broken Hearts was less a self-conscious rebranding and more a display of true artistic range.
