Since the early 2010s, Thobani Mgobhozi, a.k.a. Que DJ, has been a prominent torchbearer of gqom, the dark electronic sound pioneered in Durban, South Africa. As one half of Distruction Boyz, alongside Goldmax, he helped catalyse the genre’s national appeal through producing Babes Wodumo’s 2016 hit “Wololo”. The duo went on to release 2017’s Gqom Is the Future and 2018’s It Was All a Dream to critical acclaim and certified gold status, while effervescent tracks like “Madness”, “Shut Up & Groove” and the chart-topping “Omunye” further catapulted the gqom into the mainstream. With his first solo project, 2020’s We Don’t Play the Same Gqom, Que made a grand return to the minimal core sound of the genre. Amid changing trends within the South African dance scene, Que’s success serves as a testament to gqom’s continued vitality.
