At Home With Foo Fighters: The Playlist

In the lead-up to their upcoming album Medicine at Midnight, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl is motivated to switch up the usual album release promotion cycle considering the current pandemic. “In the last six or seven months, you kind of have to think outside of your lane and all the things you used to do,” Grohl tells Apple Music. “That's exciting in that way; we talk about it every time we get together. Just come up with really weird and silly ways to be productive within the restrictions of what everybody's going through right now.” Looking back at the year that's passed, the veteran rockers sat down with Zane Lowe to discuss their weirdest Christmas traditions, performing on SNL in high spirits just a few days after the presidential election, and the songs that bring them holiday joy. Check out some of the band’s picks below. Rihanna, “Consideration” (feat. SZA) Dave Grohl: “You need a soundtrack. You need something to dance to. You need a little beat and an old buddy. And so ‘Consideration’ is a nice little beat when you're walking around the tree putting the lights up.” Slade, “Merry Xmas Everybody” Taylor Hawkins: “Before the holidays we were touring in England, and I remember walking through the airport at Heathrow and hearing it, and I’m like, ‘What is this?’ Just, ‘What is that?’ I love that era. I love ’70s glam music. So I love it.” The Kinks, “Father Christmas” Chris Shiflett: “That is, in my view, the greatest Christmas song.” Mariah Carey, “The Roof” Pat Smear: “I didn't want to pick the obvious Mariah Carey Christmas song because everyone plays it anyways, and it's Mariah Carey, so I chose 'The Roof'.” Tom Waits, “Ol’ 55” Rami Jaffee: “The holidays for me is lighting the fire, putting on some early Tom Waits, having a glass of red wine and maybe burning some pine cones. So that's where I get my Tom Waits Christmas thing from.” Foals, “Spanish Sahara” Nate Mendel: “I did not get the note that these were supposed to be Christmas-specific songs. So I just did songs that I like, like Foals.”
