About Nitin Sawhney

One of the new wave of Asian acts to achieve mainstream acceptance in the UK music industry during the 1990s, Nitin Sawhney developed an eclectic mix of Indian music with British jazz, dance music, R&B and rock. After producing music for film, television and theatre, Sawhney released his groundbreaking debut album, Spirit Dance (1993) on World Circuit Records. The album combined flamenco and jazz guitar with drum and bass loops, electronica and classically inspired Indian singing. The successful club single, ‘In The Mind’, preceded 1996’s ambitious set, Displacing The Priest, and after the excellent Beyond Skin (1999) he made his major label debut with Prophesy (2001) for V2. Philtre (2005) was inspired by Sawhney’s return to active DJing and displayed a more club-orientated direction.
