EDITORS’ NOTES

There’s an essential sweetness in Amanda Shires’ voice—birdlike, it quavers on high notes, affects a vibrato on descending runs, then tapers to a half-spoken whisper. That quality adds conversational warmth to her robust Americana tunes, showcasing the striking imagery and distinctive perspective in her lyrics. Written while Shires was carrying her first child with husband/collaborator Jason Isbell, My Piece of Land vibrates with anticipation and fluctuating emotions, from the mournful anxiety of “Slippin’” to “Nursery Rhyme,” a tender litany of a lullaby.

Wow . . .

. . . not sure what else to say. I have "known of" Amanda Shires for a number of years and watched/listened and really really wanted to like her music. And frankly, that's as far as it went for me. Yes, I liked her music, but something was missing that prevented me from putting her songs on my playlist, etc. This album is a game changer. Mark my words, this album will be known from here on out as her "break through" album that puts her on every singer/songwriter fan's playlist. Very rich lyrics which really showcase her voice. If this is not on all of the year-end "best album" lists (especially in the singer/songwriter category), that will be all the evidence I need that those lists are meaningless. Thanks Amanda for an amazing piece of ear candy.

Tumbleweed Daydream

An album to get lost in. Every track has a whisper of days long ago yet blends softly with a modern day indie flare. Stunning songwriting, cadence and pure musicianship. Turn on the stereo, turn off the outside and get lost in a daydream of modern day drifters.
