When Triumph took the stage at Sweden Rock Festival on June 7, 2008, the band’s three original members hadn’t played onstage together for more than 20 years. Yet far from being rusty, they sounded completely up to date. Even though the band had helped define the sound of '80s metal, the opening notes of the bluesy, gritty “When the Lights Go Down” make it clear that they'd stayed attuned to the changing sound of their chosen genre. The band members were all past 50, but there's absolutely nothing passive or wimpy about these versions of “Allied Forces,” “Lay It on the Line,” and “Rock and Roll Machine.” As untested rock hopefuls in their early 20s, these Canadians had covered Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way” in the hopes of stealing some of that hard-bitten rock majesty for themselves. They reprise that old favorite here, but it sounds almost quaint next to the band’s forceful originals. This reunion set left no doubt that the little trio from Toronto had finally transformed into one of the heavyweight acts in the history of hard rock.
