Float Along - Fill Your Lungs

Arriving on the heels of two albums’ worth of the gentle, gauzy psych-pop to which the Melbourne crew would often return, 2013’s Float Along – Fill Your Lungs was where King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard truly became one of the globe’s great purveyors of wild astral jams and face-melting freakouts. The addition of second drummer Eric Moore—previously deployed as keyboardist—is one big reason for the explosive power of the album’s 16-minute opener, “Head On/Pill,” and shorter bursts like “God Is Calling Me Back Home.” Yet the incorporation of new textures and colors (and plenty more sitar) demonstrates just how rapidly Stu Mackenzie’s vision for his group was expanding. This is the sound of a band setting the controls for the heart of the sun before hurtling off the launchpad.
