Puerta Abierta, Vol. 1

Puerta Abierta, Vol. 1

For much of his career thus far, regional Mexican star El Fantasma has more or less gone it alone while some of his peers have found pathways to success through collaborations and features with other notables in the genre. With Puerta Abierta, Vol. 1, all of that changes. The baker’s dozen of tracks puts a series of hugely talented artists alongside the typically solo hitmaker, broadening his sound without taking away from what’s made him so popular. Among the duets included here are ones with Larry Hernández, Meño Sanchez, and Julián Mercado, representing the multigenerational variety that keeps this music so vibrant. One of a number of live performances, “Los Enjambres” finds Alfredo Olivas in familiar thematic territory while buoyed by a spirited band of players, something reprised on the fatalistic barroom laments of “Contrato Con la Muerte.” Similarly, Calibre 50 adds their signature to the free-flowing “Borracho de Cochera.”
