EDITORS’ NOTES

Big House to Ocean Floor looks back on Audio Adrenaline’s first 12 years, when its incendiary mix of rock, pop, and funk pushed it to the forefront of Christian music. The album’s 16 tracks cover most of the band’s high points from 1993’s Don’t Censor Me through 2005’s Until My Heart Caves In, tracing its expanding musical ambition along the way. Favoring flow over chronological order in its sequencing, the album leaps from infectious groovers like “Big House” and “Get Down” to straight-ahead rockers like “Underdog” and confessional ballads like “Pierced.” The crowd-rousing “We’re a Band” and “Never Gonna Be as Big as Jesus” are complemented by more subtle fare like the quirky “Some Kind of Zombie” and the Beatles-esque “Leaving 99.” Mark Stuart’s flair for rock showmanship as frontman comes through, as does the inventive guitar work of Tyler Burkum (who joined the band in 1997). Big House to Ocean Floor distills the best of this influential band’s initial output for hardcore fans and newcomers alike.
