Every Time You Say Goodbye

Every Time You Say Goodbye

Every Time You Say Goodbye marks a major turning point in the career of Alison Krauss and Union Station. With this 1992 effort (which won the GRAMMY for Best Bluegrass Album) Krauss and her band went from being the bluegrass world’s best-kept secret to being embraced by country, folk, and even rock audiences. The album’s defining track is the title cut, an immaculately crafted hybrid of country, pop and bluegrass. It's as catchy as any of the big banner hits on modern Nashville radio, but as heartfelt as a Blue Sky Boys ballad. With “Another Night,” “Cluck Old Hen” and “Another Day, Another Dollar” (the last of which is a duet that displays the seamless vocal blend between Krauss and guitarist Tim Stafford), Union Station prove they can still play old-school bluegrass, but the band becomes something spectacular when Krauss is in the spotlight. It's hard to think of a more ethereal voice than the one that leads “Jesus Help Me to Stand,” but “Last Love Letter,” “Heartstrings,” and “New Fool” prove that even when she isn’t singing gospel Krauss emits a cloudless light.
