While she made her name acting in films by Xavier Dolan, Jean-Marc Vallée, and Denis Villeneuve, Montreal’s Evelyne Brochu has long been hiding a secret talent: a dreamy voice you could float away on. Reconvening with an old college friend, Félix Dyotte, the two came up with the breezy ditty "C'est l'été" over a bottle of wine in 2017. With 11 more songs written and produced by Dyotte, Brochu's debut LP is an enchanting ride through French chanson in its many mellifluous forms. From the disco-tinged "Maintenant ou jamais," a whispered dance-floor number about seizing the moment, to the Serge Gainsbourg-esque sensuality of "Copie carbone," Brochu confidently showcases her range without ever over-stretching. Even on the gently shimmying "Escale à Madrid," between handclaps and a playfully syncopated rhythm, she plays it cool, cooing sly come-ons like she's been doing this all her life.
