A Lovely Cole Porter Songbook

This album takes you to another world: to a dimly lit, smoky revue bar long ago in Paris. The clarinet is beautifully played in WHAT IS THIS THING CALLED LOVE, one of Porter’s well-known hits. Another one of his hits, NIGHT AND DAY, is one of my favourites – I love the soft, syncopated percussion and the euphoria of love in the lyrics. IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT is pensive, quiet but stirring. Calabria Foti’s singing has such warmth and emotion – really a beautiful collection!

Calabria Foti’s paralyzingly beautiful voice makes it virtually impossible to choose a favorite song on this album. And coupled with the mastery of musicians Eddie Daniels, Gene Bertoncini, Richard Locker, Bob McChesney, Ike Sturm, Jared Schonig, Michael Patterson, this album might just set a new standard for “standards.” This is perfect the confluence of a great singer and great musicians. I “believed” every word and every note. Cole Porter…wherever you are…puff out your chest…
