8 Songs, 25 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

SBTRKT frames SAVE YOURSELF in terms of oppositions: today's environmental catastrophes versus tomorrow's space colonies. Fittingly, the album flits between twin poles of despair and what he calls "dark optimism," contrasting the evil, skulking techno of "LET THEM IN" with whimsical, organ-kissed funk tracks "GEMINI" and "READY OR NOT." Auto-Tuned crooner The-Dream provides the album's conflicted emotional center: He radiates joy on "GOOD MORNING," a tender love song to the human race, but on the somber "BURY YOU," he gives chills with a simple question: "How does it feel to be gone?"

Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics.

SBTRKT Is Back, And Better Than Ever

I definitely wasn't expecting anything from SBTRKT for quite a while (after the release of Wonder Where We Land). Once I saw the teaser photo for the compilation on his Connect, I knew I had to check it out when it was finished.

Some people (including myself) were disappointed with the musical style introduced on his second LP, and favored the one introduced on his debut album instead. This compilation however, ingeniously combines the production styles from BOTH albums and makes beautiful songs as a result.

All of the tracks featuring The-Dream were my personal favorites, and I also appreciated the songs that used only the style from his first album.

Overall, I'd say this was a massive improvement compared to Wonder Where We Land. I wish I could've heard more variety of instruments, but it's still impressive nonetheless. Way to go SBTRKT!
