Breaking out of mid-'90s California, No Doubt's sunshine combo of bright pop melodies and danceable, ska-indebted grooves helped their generation bust a move. Singer Gwen Stefani's charisma explodes through the speakers on rollicking blasts of alt-rock like “Just a Girl”, and slinks over blissful New Wave synths on the sultry “It's My Life”. It's not all good times, though: “Simple Kind of Life” is a breezy, broken-hearted reflection, and you can hear Stefani's pain as she howls the chorus of “Don't Speak” over Spanish guitar.
