In fusing nu-metal and hip-hop with beatdown hardcore, Queens-based Emmure deliver a decidedly macho take on the metalcore that emerged from the East Coast in the mid-00s. The band’s vocalist and sole original member, Frankie Palmeri, litters their songs with pop-culture references, name-dropping the Dragon Ball manga series on the staccato slam of “Solar Flare Homicide” and the Street Fighter computer game amid the gleeful guitar dissonance of “Demons With Ryu”. Vicious breakdowns reign supreme across Emmure’s entire discography, particularly on the crushing climax of “Flag of the Beast” and the bellicose “Nemesis”.
