Dying to Live

One of the best religious rappers working today, Nashville's PRO (formerly known as Prodigal) has been putting out top-notch, righteous hip-hop since the mid-‘90s. Though his albums are fervently independent, the production is diverse and professional. It’s as catchy and slick as anything you'd hear on mainstream radio but with considerably more originality and musicianship in the mix, featuring tracks that incorporate heavy metal ("Full Court"), minimalist snap music ("Get It"), moody Dirty South crunk ("Get Buck"), and synth-propelled pop ("Drink from His Cup"). Lyrically, many of the songs center on his appreciation for God, but he serves it up in a subtle way, distracting you with banging beats, intricate rhymes, and a wildly enthusiastic flow. Like-minded guests (PK, Jai, Lecrae, Tedashii, Nya, Rio, KB, Json) appear on several joints, but PRO is the star here and clearly has the talent to blow up even in the secular market. Check out "Going In," "Merked Pt. 2," and "Never Back Down."
