Roland Kaiser Essentials

Since first charting in the mid-'70s, Berlin-born schlager star Roland Kaiser has served as a sort of guttural-voiced German equivalent of Neil Diamond, shaping manly, deeply crooned emotion into catchy love songs. He's translated Lee Hazlewood's foreboding “Summer Wine”, and some of his more beloved numbers borrow their melodies from English-language '70s soft-rock hits by artists like Chris Rea and Tony Orlando & Dawn. They're frequently made even hookier by ABBA-style backup choruses, castanets, handclaps and a modernised, semi-synthesised beat that's light yet insistent.
