It was revealed recently that Moderna’s experimental COVID-19 vaccine was made possible in part thanks to a sizeable donation from Dolly Parton—just the latest act of philanthropy in a life full of them. “I really am one of those people that enjoyed the giving more than I did the getting,” Parton tells Apple Music. “I grew up in a very spirit-based family, and so that was what we were taught—and to have an open heart.” But this holiday season, what the legendary country artist is most excited about is sharing the gift of song with her latest holiday album A Holly Dolly Christmas: “This is a good year to have a lot of gifts and a lot of special holiday joy, because people are not going to get to have their regular type of Christmas this year. I thought I'd just throw as much Dolly stuff out there as I could.” Parton also curated an exclusive playlist of songs from artists that have shaped significant moments of her life, featuring the likes of Whitney Houston, Reba McEntire, Lauren Daigle and the late Kenny Rogers, whom she considers to be her soulmate and a great singing partner. They collaborated on the 1984 TV special and studio album Once Upon a Christmas, represented here with the track “A Christmas to Remember”. “His thick voice and my smaller voice, there was just something that complemented it,” she says. “Plus, I think that our emotions and our personal magic kind of wove itself into that, too. And I think people felt the love and the passion that we had for one another.”
