About Nicola Benedetti

Violinist Nicola Benedetti’s lithe, fine-spun tone, immaculate technique, and magnetic stage presence were unmistakable when in 2004, aged 16, she won the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year competition with a sensuous performance of Szymanowski’s First Violin Concerto (1916). By then, the Menuhin School-trained Benedetti—born in West Kilbride, North Ayrshire, in 1987—was already a seasoned soloist whose exceptional gifts had been the focus of a television documentary. Within a year of winning the BBC competition, “yellow label” Deutsche Grammophon recorded the Szymanowski (with the LSO and Daniel Harding), closely followed by the Mendelssohn E minor Concerto (1844), a work whose elfin elegance and cantabile sweetness played directly to Benedetti’s strengths. Her coming-of-age release was a 2010 coupling of the Bruch G minor (rev. 1867) and Tchaikovsky (1878) concertos, notable for its calm, interpretive poise and gently shimmering pyrotechnics. In addition to her concert activities, of which her regular piano trio with cellist Leonard Elschenbroich and pianist Alexei Grynyuk forms an essential part, Benedetti is deeply committed to music education. In 2019, she established The Benedetti Foundation, whose aim is to unite, inspire and educate through the creation and delivery of inspirational, energetic and innovative workshops and video content.
