Though some reggaeton fans may not know the name Jose Angel "Gocho" Torres, there are few who would be unfamiliar with his work. From his first smash hit compilation MVP, to his production on breakthrough hits like Don Omar's "Dale Don Dale" and Shakira's "La Tortura," Gocho's celebrity is ensured. His reputation as a prodigy is no doubt due in part to the influence of his musical family. His grandfather was the owner of legendary vocal group Los Hispanos de Puerto Rico, his father a veteran salsa trombonist, his brother a member of hit group Cultura Profetica, and his aunt a backing singer for Latin pop A-listers, Gocho was brought up around music as a profession. Originally intent on a career in medicine, Gocho entered the world of reggaeton almost by accident. He accompanied his friend Angel (of Angel y Khriz) into the studio for a recording session where he discovered a desire for a new direction in his life. Working for producer Manolo Guatauba and loading luggage at the airport, Torres saved up enough money to produce his own "various artist" reggaeton record, titled MVP (2002). The record generated genre crossover hit "Dale Don Dale," which became an international radio smash. Selling an unbelievable 100,000 units, Torres had arrived on the scene as not only a budding talent but a major player at age 19. He was soon sought out by national stars like Divino and Angel y Khriz as well as by international star Shakira, for whom he produced hit single "La Tortura." Gocho's follow-up compilation MVP, Vol. 2: The Grand Slam debuted at number four on Billboard's Top Latin Album category.
