Vivaldi: Four Seasons

Vivaldi: Four Seasons

Big-band Vivaldi is something of a curiosity these days. This sprightly recording dates from 1981 and returns in Spatial Audio in 2021, with world-leading violinist Gidon Kremer rightfully placed centre stage in the new sound picture. One of the joys of this recording is the delightful harpsichord- and organ-playing of Leslie Pearson, which nicely complements Claudio Abbado’s vivid characterisation and high drama. The moments of repose are quite ravishing and the sleepy slow movement of L’autunno, in particular, is heavenly. Kremer is in top form, his bow skipping over strings with great style and poetry, and he subscribes to the conductor’s colourful vision with palpable enthusiasm.
