Apple Music Home Session: CHVRCHES

While there’s no denying the challenges that 2020 brought to everyone, plenty of music has been made that uses the turbulence and uncertainty as creative fuel. Certainly, Glasgow-formed synth-pop trio CHRVCHES found themselves channelling the restrictions of lockdown into their fourth album, Screen Violence. “It helped put a lot of things into perspective,” singer/multi-instrumentalist Lauren Mayberry tells Apple Music. “The band is normally an amazing but quite chaotic part of our lives. Working on Screen Violence became a really comforting and grounding thing to do because the band was one of the only things that provided us with some sense of normalcy.” It’s not difficult to sense lockdown reflected in a track such as “California”; reimagined for this exclusive Home Session, it explores themes of remoteness and retreat in a state full of people striving for success. “Lockdown provided a much-needed reset and helped us think about where we were going and what we really want to say in our music,” says Mayberry. “Especially lyrically, the isolation of lockdown was almost an aha moment in terms of choosing how I wanted to move forwards, and I think I'll hold on to that. ‘California’ feels like a good illustration of what Screen Violence is about, sonically and lyrically, and we thought it would be fun to reinterpret it in an acoustic format.” Themes of solitude also stretch into the trio’s choice of cover, as they deliver their take on a heartbroken Avril Lavigne hit from 2002. “‘I’m With You’ is a classic banger-ballad of our times,” says Mayberry.
